Knoxville Smokies News Release
Kodak, Tenn - The Tennessee Smokies (8-5) retook control of first place in the Southern League North with a 4-0 win over the Rocket City Trash Pandas (8-6) Saturday night at Smokies Stadium.
The Smokies shut out the Trash Pandas with a combination of three arms. Starter Riley Thompson went three innings, allowing a single hit and striking out four batters. In relief, Peyton Remy tossed five innings, surrendering just three hits and striking out seven while securing his second win of the season. Brandon Hughes closed out the ninth, collecting one strikeout to give Tennessee 12 punchouts for the game.
Tennessee obtained a quick lead over the Trash Pandas thanks to a first-inning, two-run home run from right fielder Nelson Valazquez. The home run was Valazquez's fifth of the season, tying him for the lead league with Rocket City's Trey Cabbage and Pensacola's Jerar Encarnacion.
The Smokies and the Trash Pandas will play the sixth and final game of their series on Sunday afternoon at Smokies Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET when the Smokies send Javier Assad (0-1, 2.53 ERA) to the mound to face Rocket City's Ky Bush (1-0, 1.04 ERA).
