Smokies and Barons Split Seven-Inning Double-Header
June 17, 2023 - Southern League (SL)
Knoxville Smokies News Release
The Tennessee Smokies won game one, 2-1. Haydn McGeary doubled home Owen Caissie in the top of the first for the first run of the game. The Birmingham Barons tied the game, 1-1, in the bottom of the fourth, on a sac fly and throwing error.
With bases empty and two outs in the top of the fifth, Caissie hit a solo shot, which was his 12th home run of the season to put the Smokies back in front 2-1. That would be the final score of game number one.
The winning pitcher for the Smokies was Walker Powell (W, 3-3). He recorded a quality outing for his second consecutive start. In six innings, Powell allowed one run on five hits, no walks and two strikeouts.
The Barons (21-41) won game two, 11-10. Birmingham led 6-0 after the second inning and 9-3 after the third inning. The Smokies (34-28) proceeded to score seven unanswered runs to take a 10-9 lead, but Birmingham scored the final two runs of the game in the bottom of the sixth on a Moises Castillo two-run single.
The series finale will be played at Regions Field on Sunday. First pitch will be at 5 p.m. eastern time.
