Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI -- Frisco rode a seven-run sixth to a 9-5 triumph over Corpus Christi Sunday afternoon before 6,394 at Whataburger Field.
Both clubs stand 8-8 after splitting the four-game series.
The RoughRiders broke open a 2-1 contest in the sixth, sending 11 men to the plate in the process. They surged on seven hits off Sergio Perez (2-1) and Wilton Lopez and benefited from two errors. Justin Smoak doubled to open the frame and Chad Tracy followed with his fourth round-tripper of the season onto the left-field berm. A Steve Murphy double, Guilder Rodriguez' two-run triple and RBI single by Marcus Lemon kept the fireworks going. Two runs scored via throwing errors by shortstop Jhon Florentino and second baseman Drew Meyer on the same play.
Smoak's third home run gave Frisco a 2-0 first-inning lead. Jose Vallejo reached on an infield single and pilfered second base before Smoak lined a 2-2 delivery from Perez over the wall in left-center.
Vallejo and Smoak, Frisco's 2-3 hitters, collected nine hits in the four-game series.
Corpus Christi immediately halved the lead on just two Omar Poveda pitches. Collin DeLome tripled into the right-field corner and Meyer plated him with a sacrifice fly to deep left.
The Hooks bunched four runs off Kea Kometani in the seventh and eighth to draw within four. DeLome and Drew Locke collected RBI singles and Mitch Einertson and Florentino homered consecutively to begin the eighth. Locke finished with four hits in extending his hitting streak to six games; Einertson sits at six as well.
Poveda (3-1), who threw 88 pitches, scattered six hits in six innings of work. He walked and struck out three. Perez was tagged for six runs on eight hits and recorded four strikeouts.
The Hooks travel to Midland for four games with the RockHounds Monday through Thursday. Southpaw Polin Trinidad (1-2) faces Midland right-hander Jason Fernandez (1-2) in the opener.
