Smith's OT Winner Pushes Chiefs to Fourth-Straight Win

February 13, 2019 - Western Hockey League (WHL) - Spokane Chiefs News Release

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs extended their winning streak to four games Tuesday night as they picked up an overtime victory over the Red Deer Rebels by a score of 4-3. New Jersey Devils prospect Ty Smith scored twice, including game-winner.

After falling behind early, the Chiefs tied things back up at 1-1 when Jaret Anderson-Dolan pounced on a Rebels turnover and broke through the Red Deer defense for the goal, giving him markers in each of his last four games. The goal was scored just seconds after the Chiefs killed off one of three Red Deer power plays on the night.

Red Deer reclaimed the lead at 7:17 of the second period when a Brandon Hagel shot deflected off a skate and past Chiefs netminder Bailey Brkin to put the Rebels ahead 2-1. Box Score: SPO (4) vs. RD (3) OT

The lead was short-lived as Smith then took advantage of a Spokane power play opportunity, knocking down a clearing attempt to keep the puck in the Chiefs' offensive zone, eventually scoring from the left circle to make it 2-2. Rookie forward Adam Beckman added a deflection goal at 18:42 to give the Chiefs the 3-2 advantage headed into the final intermission. Beckman is second among WHL rookies in goals scored with 23.

After a Rebels goal at 2:06 of the third, both sides were held scoreless for the remainder of the period but Red Deer picked up a penalty for too many men at 19:48, a penalty which would prove to be costly as it carried over into overtime.

Just 30 seconds into the extra frame, Smith connected again for the Chiefs, rifling a one-timer from the right circle past Red Deer goaltender Ethan Anders to give Spokane two points in the standings.

Making his third consecutive start in the net, Brkin was 29-of-32 in the winning effort for the Chiefs while Anders finished the night 26-for-30. Spokane converted 2-of-5 power play chances while the Rebels were held 0-for-3.
