Smash and Grab Lead Nuts to 4-3 Win

August 18, 2016 - California League (CalL1)
Modesto Nuts News Release

Dom Nunez and Josh Fuentes performed in crunch time to propel the Modesto Nuts to a thrilling 4-3 comeback over the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes on Wednesday night.

Down all evening, and starting 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position, Dom Nunez gave the Nuts (22-31; 49-74) their first lead when he slammed a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth off Quakes (27-76; 43-80) reliever David Reid-Foley (L, 1-2).

In the top of the ninth, Luis Niebla (S, 13/14) avenged his blown save from Monday against the Quakes but it wasn't easy. His first pitched was lined into right for a triple. Niebla struck out the next two before Josh Fuentes' heroics. Devan Ahart smashed a rocket toward first. Fuentes laid out to his right to spear the laser. From a knee, he threw to first to get a dramatic 27th out in the win.

Nunez finished 3-for-3 with three RBI. Drew Weeks had a RBI single. Forrest Wall reached twice with a walk and a single in four plate appearances.

Parker French worked seven terrific innings. He surrendered three runs in the first, two of them unearned, on six hits with six strikeouts and no walks.

Troy Neiman (W, 2-1) worked around a single and a walk in the eighth out of the Nuts' bullpen.

The finale of a four-game series against the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes is Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. Coverage on ModestoNuts.com will start at 7:00 p.m. Listen live online.
