Ruxer's Arm, Hermosillo's Bat Lead Sixers Over Storm

Lake Elsinore, CA- The Inland Empire 66ers had perfect recipe for a win as they got early runs, strong starting pitching, stout bullpen work and late insurance runs in a 5-2 victory over the Lake Elsinore Storm at The Diamond on Wednesday. Inland Empire improved to 7-13 against Lake Elsinore (62-62, 30-23) on the season.

The 66ers (42-81, 19-34) scored in the first when Michael Hermosillo singled to open the game, his first of three hits on the night. He moved from first to third when Storm 1B Josh Naylor mishandled a pickoff from Brett Kennedy (5-9). Hermosillo then scored on Tim Arakawa's RBI grounder to take a 1-0 lead. The 66ers made it 3-0 in the second when Michael Strentz clobbered his fifth homer of the season, a two-run shot to left, against Kennedy.

Inland Empire starter Jared Ruxer was strong on the hill tossing a career-high 5.2 innings allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits with no walks and two Ks. Ruxer was credited with the win, his first in the Cal League, and improved to 1-4. Ty France knocked in both runs for the Storm with a pair of RBI singles.

The Sixers added late runs to pad the lead that had been whittled to 3-2 in the sixth. In the seventh Hermosillo doubled and came home on Arakawa's double to make it 4-2. Hermosillo did it himself in the ninth as he smoked a liner out of the park to left against Storm reliever Ben Paullus to make it 5-2 and cap the scoring. Hermosillo finished with three runs scored and a RBI. Sam Holland tossed two no-hit, shutout frames to ice the game and earn his first save of the season; the save came against his former club as the Brisbane, AUS native pitched for the Storm in 2015 while a San Diego Padres' farmhand.
