Visalia Rawhide News Release
VISALIA, CA - Markus Solbach shutout the Stockton Ports (50-73, 23-30) for eight-plus innings before finally relinquishing a run as the Visalia Rawhide (72-51, 26-27) defeated the Ports 2-1 on Wednesday night at Recreation Ballpark.
Leading 2-0 heading into the ninth inning and having already thrown 93 pitches RHP Markus Solbach (3-1, 4.05) emerged from the Rawhide dugout to close out the complete game shutout. He retired LF John Nogowski with one pitch on a soft line drive for the first out. DH Sandber Pimentel struck out swinging on a high fastball on four pitches for the second out of the inning, which brought up 3B Jose Brizuela. Brizuela slapped a two out double down the left field line into foul territory for the fifth hit of the night for Stockton, giving him three hits for the game for the third straight night. 1B Chris Iriart, who was making his California League debut, was the next batter up. Iriart lined an RBI single to right field to cut the lead to 2-1 and chase Solbach from the game.
Solbach finished with 8.2 innings pitched, allowing six hits and one run (earned) with one walk and he struck out eight before relinquishing to RHP Nick Baker (SV: 2), who threw three pitches to end the game and preserve the 2-1 win, earning his second save of the season.
RHP Brett Graves (7-9, 4.50) made his sixth start of the season against the Rawhide and held Visalia scoreless through the first five innings. It wasn't until a leadoff double in the sixth by 1B Austin Byler that the Rawhide eventually scored a run, even after they loaded the bases both in the fourth and fifth innings but came away empty.
3B Marty Herum followed the Byler double with an RBI single, scoring Byler from second for a 1-0 lead. Herum's single also chased Graves from the game after pitching five-innings and allowing just four hits and one run (earned) on two walks and six strikeouts; he did hit three batters in the loss as well.
RHP Joey Wagman, in the seventh, gave up back-to-back doubles to CF Colin Bray and LF Cody Regis for a Visalia insurance run to push the lead to 2-0.
Solbach had retired nine in a row into the ninth inning when Brizuela doubled but still earned his third win of the season.
Tomorrow night is the series finale and Visalia will send RHP Brad Keller (8-7, 4.53) to the mound against RHP James Naile (3-0, 4.05) for Stockton. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. from Rawhide Ballpark and it's a Thirsty Thursday presented by Party City as well as Mustache Appreciation Night.
