Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, FL (April 30, 2006) - Fort Myers Miracle starter Kevin Slowey entered Sunday afternoon's ballgame at Terry Park with the 10th best ERA in the Florida State League. Despite the impressive numbers, he had yet to earn a decision. That all changed when the Miracle defeated the Dunedin Blue Jays 6-2.
Slowey was his usual impressive, composed self on the mound. The only trouble he ran into came in the fourth. Ryan Patterson reached on third baseman Jose Leger's two base fielding error. With one out Dustin Majewski reached on second baseman Luke Hughes' fielding error which sent Patterson to third. With two outs Christian Snavely singled home Patterson, but Slowey struck out Aaron Matthews to end the inning. Slowey worked 6.0 innings allowing one unearned run on just two hits while striking out five and earned his first victory of the season.
The Miracle, who moved to 14-9 on the season, jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Brock Peterson singled to center. Jeremy Pickrel tripled off the right field wall to score Peterson. Kyle Geiger's ground out scored Pickrel.
The Miracle got all the insurance runs they needed in the seventh. Jose Leger, who finished the day 4-4 with a double and a run scored, doubled to lead off the inning. Justin Arneson sacrificed him to third and Leger scored on Trevor Plouffe's RBI single. Garrett Guzman's single and an intentional walk to Peterson loaded the bases. Pickrel lined out to short, but Geiger doubled down the left field line to clear the bases and give the Miracle a 6-1 lead.
The Blue Jays added one run in the eighth on a walk to Ryan Klosterman and an RBI double by Patterson, but the Blue Jays rally was thwarted when Majewski singled to center and Arneson gunned out Patterson trying to score.
The Miracle and Blue Jays will play the second game of the series Monday night at Hammond Stadium at 7:05 p.m. The Miracle send LHP Kyle Aselton (1-1, 3.05) against Blue Jays RHP Brian Wolfe (1-3, 5.57).
