Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release

(Vero Beach, FL) - An unearned run in the 8th inning helped the Palm Beach Cardinals drop the Dodgers 2-1 for the second night in a row at Holman Stadium Sunday. The loss spoiled five shutout innings from starter Blake Johnson. The series concludes Monday night at 7:00 PM.

Johnson left with a 1-0 lead and a chance to improve his record to 2-0. The former 2nd Round Draft Pick scattered four hits and one walk while striking out three Cardinals.

The Dodgers gave Johnson the lead in the 5th when Xavier Paul led off with a single. He then stole second and third to bring the infield in. Jimmy Rohan bounced a ball to second that made Matt Shepherd dive to his backhand side and allowed Paul to score the game's first run. Rohan and Paul each finished with two hits.

The Cardinals then did something no team had done since last Sunday - score on the Vero Beach bullpen. With two outs in the 6th, Terry Evans wrapped a solo home run around the left field foul pole off Adam Thomas to tie the score. It was the first run allowed by the Dodgers pen in 24 innings.

The winning run scored in the 8th. Sean Danielson drew a one-out walk from Thomas and stole second. Shepherd then lined a single to center. Ryan Russ juggled and then dropped the ball, allowing Danielson to come home with the difference-making run.
