New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ The New Jersey Jackals hit a road block in Elmira, while falling to the Pioneers 10-1 in game one of a three game set. The Jackals finished the ballgame with 6 errors, in an ugly defensive ballgame.
The Jackals showed the first signs of some sloppy defense in the bottom of the second inning, allowing the Pioneers to score the first three runs of the contest. Onix Mercado singled with two runners aboard, scoring them both, but he rounded the bases with ease as well, as Jake Whitesides and Jose Salas committed errors.
Errors would hurt New Jersey once again in the bottom half of the third. The Pioneers plated four more runs, in an inning in which the Jackals committed another pair of miscues. Jeremy Booth, Ransel Melgarejo, and Samon Peters all tallied RBIs in the frame.
Elmira added three more runs in the bottom of seventh, to put themselves up 10-0, and finish off the Jackals. Jobu Morita and Mercado both hit back to back doubles for RBIs, and Derek Barrows drove in the final run on a single.
The Jackals only run came in the top of the eighth on an RBI double by Steve Checksfield.
Elmira starter Rolado Viera paralyzed the Jackals in his seven innings of work. He shut out the Jackals, allowing on four hits, while walking three and striking out seven. He improved to 2-0 in just as many starts with the Pioneers.
Rick Kirsten had a rough outing, and suffered the loss in 2+ innings of work. He allowed seven hits, seven runs, with six of them being earned runs. He walked one, and fanned none.
