WORCESTER 3, GRAYS 1 @ Worcester, Mass. Time: 3:02 ATT: 2,126 W: Mike Cox (2-4) L: Andrew Edwards (1-3) S: Dave Byard (11) HR: WOR - Omar Pena (13) Tornadoes starter Mike Cox allowed just one hit through six innings and Dave Byard worked through trouble in the form of a pair of walks in the ninth to record his eleventh save as Worcester edged the Grays in the first game of the series. Andrew Edwards had a strong start for the Grays, allowing three runs on five hits and striking out eight in eight innings of work, but was a victim of quiet bats, as the Grays managed just four hits, half coming in the seventh inning. LF Josh Beauregard was 1-for-2 with a pair of walks and drove in the first two Tornado runs. CF Bernard Caston had the lone Gray RBI, drawing a bases-loaded walk in the seventh inning. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ELMIRA 10, NEW JERSEY 1 @ Elmira, N.Y. Time: 2:58 ATT: 1,104 W: Rolando Viera (2-0) L: Rick Kirsten (3-5) S: None HR: None Every Elmira player had at least one hit, eight of nine Pioneers scored and six different batters drove in a run while starter Rolando Viera shut out the Jackals for seven innings and Elmira broke a four game losing streak in decisive fashion. C Onix Mercado was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored and DH Jabe Bergeron had three hits. RF Steven Checksfield was the only New Jersey player with more than one hit, going 2-for-4 and driving in the lone Jackal run with an RBI double in the eighth. Rick Kirsten took the loss for New Jersey, giving up seven runs on seven hits in two innings. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- NEW HAVEN 12, NORTH SHORE 8 @ Lynn, Mass. Time: 2:58 ATT: 1,469 W: Courtney Hall (4-3) L: Ryan Bicondoa (6-4) S: None HR: NHC - Jeff Brooks (6), Orlando Encarnacion (2), Andy Larned (1) NS - Rob Fischer (11), Andy Howdeshell (3) In a game featuring a combined 20 runs, 24 hits, five long balls and a seven-run inning, the Cutters managed to out-slug North Shore and start their series off on the right foot. Every New Haven player reached base, but the offensive star of the game was undoubtedly DH Jeff Brooks, who was 3-for-5, scored twice and drove in six runs, including a solo home run in the second, a three-run double in the sixth and a two-run single in the seventh. 1B Vic Davilla had four hits for the Spirit, who have scored at least five runs in eleven straight games, winning nine of them.
