North Shore Spirit News Release

Lynn, MA.--North Shore first baseman Vic Davilla and left-hander Alex Herrera were selected by SportsTicker, the Can-Am League's official statistician, as Batter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for the week of August 1-7.

In seven games, Davilla hit .438 with four home runs, 15 RBI and nine runs scored as the Spirit stayed in the thick of the North Division race with a solid 6-1 week. On Monday in North Shore's 15-4 romp over Worcester, he went 5-for-6 with two home runs and seven RBIs, tying a league record. The New York City native has a .307 average, is second in the Can-Am League with 17 home runs, third with 61 RBI and is tied for fourth with 29 extra-base hits.

This is Davilla's thirteenth season in professional baseball. A 26th-round pick of Toronto in 1993 out of Westchester Community College, the 32-year-old spent four seasons in the Blue Jays organization, reaching as high as single-A. He has been in independent baseball since 1997, also playing for Adirondack, Albany-Colony and Allentown of the Northeast League/Northern League East. Last season, his first in North Shore, Davilla was fourth in the league with a .330 average to go along with 14 home runs and 56 RBIs.

Herrera pitched in five games for North Shore, registering four saves and striking out eight while allowing no runs and only three hits. In 15 games for the Spirit, the former Cleveland Indian is 4-2 with a 2.87 ERA and six saves, striking out 51 batters in 47 innings of work.

The Maracaibo, Venezuela, native was signed as a non-drafted free agent by Cleveland in 1997 and spent six seasons in the Indians organization, including ten games in the majors in 2003. Last season, the 28-year-old pitched for Colorado Springs, the Rockies' AAA team. This is his first season in independent baseball.
