
Sloppy Defense Spoils Series Finale

YAKIMA, WA - The Yakima Valley Pippins trailed 3-1 entering the 4th inning but were unable to keep up with the Bellingham Bells, dropping Thursday night's series finale, 14-1, at Yakima County Stadium.
Jens Jensen (Central Washington) earned the loss for Yakima Valley (21-15, 6-3) leaving the ball game without recording an out in the 4th inning, eventually surrendering six runs, five earned, on five hits. Drake Atlee (Cal State Northridge) inherited a bases-loaded situation allowing two more runs, none earned, over his two innings of relief.
Zach Haggett (Central Washington) and Trent Schulte (Gonzaga) then combined to give up five unearned runs in relief over the next two innings before Connor Lau (Central Washington) threw a scoreless 8th inning in his first outing since June 16.
Cameron Haskell (UC Riverside) pitched a scoreless 9th inning, also finishing with the first hit of the night for the Pippins, who posted just three hits overall in the losing effort. Hunter Hanson(College of Idaho) collected his third hit in as many nights, while Jack Sandberg (San Diego) added a pitch-hit single.
The Pippins scored one unearned run in the 3rd as Christian Koss (UC Irvine) reached on an error, scoring Jace VanDeBrake (Gonzaga), who finished 0-3 with a walk and run scored. After only committing two errors over the last six games, the Pippins made four errors on Thursday night, resulting in nine unearned runs for the Bellingham Bells.
Yakima Valley returns to action Friday night at 7:05 p.m. hosting the Wenatchee AppleSox as Zach Draper (College of Idaho) will start on the mound. Fans can listen to all the action live on 1460 ESPN Yakima, the official home for Yakima Valley Pippins Baseball.
