Sliders' Rothermich Makes It 3 Wins In 3 Starts

July 25, 2012 - Prospect League (Prospect)
Springfield Sliders News Release

The Springfield Sliders salvaged a split of their series at Quincy with a 12-9 win tonight at QU Stadium in Quincy, IL. Things started well as the Sliders jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the very first inning as RF Mike Fitzgerald hit a three run opposite field home run, his fourteenth of the season. The Gems answered with two in the bottom of the first, including a lead-off home run from Zac Zdanowicz for the second straight day. The Sliders then exploded for five runs in the second inning, chasing the Gems' starter Brian Hruby in the process. LF Chase Hainline picked up an RBI with a fielder's choice, 1B Matt Tellor and 3B David Kerian each had RBI singles, and CF Ryan Aper hit a two run double. For the next several innings, the pitching started to take over, especially Sliders' starter Wade Rothermich who at one point, retired thirteen straight Quincy batters. In the sixth, the Sliders got Rothermich two more runs of support after 1B Reagan Fowler hit a two run single, and then Tellor and Fitzgerald each picked up RBIs in a two run seventh, increasing the lead to 12-2. Rothermich gave up one run in the seventh, and that was the end of his night. His final line was seven innings, 5 hits, 3 runs, 0 walks, and 6 strikeouts. The Gems tried to stage a comeback with six runs in the eighth, but were turned away in the ninth. The win improved Rothermich to 3-0 as a starter for the Sliders. The Sliders' road trip continues tomorrow when they start a two game series with the Hannibal Cavemen. The game will be broadcast on the Springfield Sliders' Ustream channel.
