Springfield Sliders News Release

The Springfield Sliders and Quincy Gems combined for eight home runs as Springfield started off its four game road trip with a 13-12 loss to the Gems tonight at QU Stadium in Quincy, IL. Things started off well for the Sliders as 1B Matt Tellor hit a solo home run in the very first inning to give the Sliders the game's first run. Quincy had an answer in the bottom of the first though, scoring three runs, including a lead-off home run. In the second inning, Sliders' C Conner Dunn singled in a run, but again the Gems had an answer in the form of a lead-off home run to make 4-2 after two. In the top of the third, Tellor hit his second home run of the game, and seventeenth of the season, a two run shot that tied the game at four. This time, it would be a two run home run that got Quincy the lead back, making the score 6-4 after three. After a scoreless fourth inning on both sides, the Sliders exploded for five runs in the fifth to take a three run lead. RF Mike Fitzgerald had a sacrifice fly, and DH Reagan Fowler and SS Matt Highland each had two run singles. In the bottom of the frame, Quincy got one back on yet another home run. The Gems would then take the lead again in the bottom of the sixth, off of a three run homer that made it 10-9. In the top of the eighth, the Sliders tied it up with Fitzgerald picking up his second RBI of the night on a fielder's choice. The game was not tied for long however, as the Gems scored two in the bottom of the inning to take a two run lead into the ninth. With one out in the ninth, Highland drew a walk, and then 2B Michael Hurwitz hit a game tying home run, his fourth of the year. In the bottom of the ninth, the Sliders could not get it done and send it to extra innings however, as the Gems were able to score on a walk-off hit by Aaron Priestes. With the win, the Gems now lead the season series 6-3. The Sliders and Gems will be back at it tomorrow with first pitch set for 6:35.

The Springfield Sliders are members of the Prospect League, playing at historic Robin Roberts Stadium. The Sliders are members of the Western Division along with the Danville (IL) Dans, DuBois County (IN) Bombers, Hannibal (MO) Cavemen, Quincy (IL) Gems, and Terre Haute (IN) Rex.
