Sliders Hang On Late To End Gems' Streak
June 6, 2012 - Prospect League (Prospect)
Springfield Sliders News Release
The Springfield Sliders had a big lead that was nearly given away in the late innings, but they hung on for their second win of the season, 11-10, against the Quincy Gems tonight at Robin Roberts Stadium. The Sliders fell behind 2-0 in the very first inning for the second straight night, but answered quickly, scoring one in the bottom of the first, and then taking the lead with three more in the third. They led 4-3 in the fourth when 1B Matt Tellor hit a bomb of a grand slam, giving him four of his five RBIs on the night. After the teams each scored once in the fifth to make it 9-4, Springfield added two in the seventh to put them up 11-4, and seemingly put the game out of reach. Quincy, on the other hand, had other ideas. Reliever Johnny White, making his Sliders' debut, gave up five runs in the eighth to pull Quincy within two. After threatening but not scoring in the bottom of the ninth, Ryan Aper came on to try and get the final three outs. Unfortunately, he walked four straight with one out and had to be relieved by T R Dunne. Dunne picked up a strikeout and then a deep fly out to end the game and pick up the save. The win improves the Sliders to 2-6 and ends the Gems' winning streak at six games. The Sliders will be at Hannibal Thursday and Friday with both games starting at 6:35, and available on the Sliders' Ustream channel. They return home Saturday to battle the Danville Dans at 8:05
The Springfield Sliders are members of the Prospect League, playing at historic Robin Roberts Stadium. The Sliders are members of the Western Division along with the Danville (IL) Dans, DuBois County (IN) Bombers, Hannibal (MO) Cavemen, Quincy (IL) Gems, and Terre Haute (IN) Rex.
