Joliet Slammers News Release

Joliet, IL- In a rain-shortened game the Joliet Slammers (12-20) defeat the River City Rascals (18-13) 3-2 after RF Casey Fletcher throws out the potential game-tying run in the eighth inning on Saturday night.

The Slammers scored first against pitcher Joe Scanio. LF JD Williams singled to lead off the frame and moved to third on an errant pickoff attempt by the pitcher. He came around to score on a 1B Nate Roberts single, putting the Slammers up 1-0 after the third inning.

The Rascals quickly got that run back in the fourth. 1B Josh Ludy led off the inning with a solo home run, his fifth of the year. The blast tied the game at 1-1.

The Slammers pulled ahead in the sixth inning. CF Charlie White led off with a single and stole second. He moved to third on a Roberts ground ball to third. With one out, 3B Mike Garza roped a single to right field, putting Joliet up 2-1.

The Slammers added a run in the sixth inning before being hit by rain. With two outs the 2B Max Casper cranked a home run over the left field fence. The long ball gave Joliet a two-run lead after the sixth.

Following a half-hour rain delay, the Rascals loaded the bases against reliever David Kubiak in the eighth inning. Reliever Navery Moore came in and struck DH Danny Canela. 3B Taylor Ard drove in CF Curran Redal with a sacrifice fly to center. 2B Hector Crespo then singled and LF Brian Hansen tried to score from second. But RF Casey Fletcher's throw to home clearly beat the runner, and catcher Jack Cleary applied the tag at home for the final out in the inning.

That's when the skies broke, and the game was called after the top of the eighth inning due to rain. Hunter Ackerman (1-1) earned the win and Navery Moore picked up his fifth save of the year. Mike Garza is our Merchants and Manufacturers Bank Player of the Game going 3-for-4 with one RBI.
