
Slammers Beat Rival Boomers 8-6

Schaumburg, IL- Behind 14 hits, the Joliet Slammers (25-36) beat the Schaumburg Boomers (25-36) 8-6 on Tuesday night.
The Slammers scored a pair in the top of the second against righty Brett Mabry. 1B Carlos Lopez bounced a ball through the right side of the infield to lead off the inning. Lf Phil Bates doubled to put two in scoring position. C Jack Cleary drove in Lopez with a sacrifice fly and after RF Casey Fletcher walked, Bates scored on a squeeze play. The Slammers led Schaumburg 2-0 after the top of the second.
The Boomers answered with a run in the bottom of the inning against Andrew Strenge. 1B Willi Martin was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. He was later knocked in by C Michael Valadez, trimming the Slammers lead to 2-1.
Joliet pushed a pair across in the third. Lopez and Bates both led off with hits. Cleary reached on an error by the 2B Dean to load the bases. Lopez scored on ground ball by Fletcher to the right side of the infield, giving the Slammers a 3-1 lead.
The Boomers tied the game with two runs in a bizarre fifth inning. With one out RF Ty Nelson reached on a throwing error by the pitcher Strenge. 2B Jordan Dean singled to move him to third. Nelson would score on a Strenge balk and Dean would come around from second to cross home on a wild pitch tying the game at 3-3 after the fifth.
The Slammers grabbed the lead back in the sixth against Hideyoshi Otake. With two outs and 1B Nate Roberts on first, Garza singled to right. Lopez singled to left to score Roberts before Bates walked to load the bases. A Cleary single brought in Garza and Lopez, putting the Slammers on top 6-3 after the top of the inning.
The Slammers added to their lead with a pair of runs in the seventh. Roberts doubled in Casper and would later score on a wild pitch, giving the Slammers and 8-3 lead heading into the seventh-inning stretch.
With David Kubiak in, the Boomers scored three runs in the seventh. Ty Nelson was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. DH Mike Schulze walked. With one out SS Craig Massey loaded the bases with a single. LF Kyle Ruchim knocked in Nelson before Martin scored Schulze. Kevin McNorton came in for Kubiak and got the Slammers out of the inning, leading 8-6.
After McNorton pitched a scoreless eighth, closer Navery Moore ran into a little trouble in the ninth before a double play ended the game with the Slammers wining 8-6. Moore earned his 11th save and Andrew Strenge ran his record to 6-5 with the win. The Slammers take on the Boomers in game two of their series tomorrow at 11am (CST).
