Amarillo Sod Poodles News Release
Amarillo, Texas - With a second grand slam in as many games, Amarillo has a three game win streak and improves to an overall record of 17-20 on the year. Garrett's grand slam put an exclamation point on the five-run inning that gave Amarillo the win.
Scoring Summary: Michael De La Cruz hit a leadoff triple off the top of the wall in deep left center field to start the home half of the second inning. Dominic Miroglio scored him after a ground out up the middle that ricocheted off the glove of RockHounds starter Bradt Feigl. Midland tied things up in the top of the fourth after a one-out walk and single gave the RockHounds runners on the corners. A sac-fly into right field tied the game at 1-1. A two-run homer in the top of the fifth inning gave Midland their first lead of the game at 3-1. Things quickly changed in the bottom of the fifth for the Soddies. After placing runners on the corners themselves, a bunt single scored a run before another walk loaded the bases. Stone Garrett blasted the 1-1 count over the left field wall for his second-career grand slam and put Amarillo back on top 6-3. Midland pulled within two runs after scoring one off a bases loaded situation of their own in the top of the seventh with a RBI walk. Chester Pimentel and Brandyn Sittinger combined to toss 2.1 scoreless frames to fend off any late rally Midland might have had in mind.
SLAMARILLO: After getting just one regular season grand slam in all of 2019 (138 games), Amarillo has now gone back-to-back games with a slam at HODGETOWN. Tonight's came off the bat of Stone Garrett, who extended his team-leading hitting streak to eight games with the 478 ft moonshot to left-center field.
Midland Moments: Jeremy Eierman went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run for the Rockhounds in the loss. He was the only player on either side to tally a multi-hit game.
Tomorrow's Tidbits: The Pointy Boots de Amarillo will once again make an appearance at HODGETOWN. Amarillo won last Wednesday's game in their COPA jerseys 19-4 and set a club-record in runs. Amarillo will hope the jerseys can continue to bring some good mojo as they once again square off with the Matamascas De Midessa.
Notes:
Bullpen Bullies: Chester Pimentel and Brandyn Sittinger combined for 2,1 scoreless innings of relief for Amarillo. This was Pimentel's 10th scoreless outing of the year in the 12 games he has played. As for Sittinger, it was his fifth scoreless outing in 11 games played, all five coming in his last seven appearances.
Doing More With Less: After beginning the season 4-18 when being outhit by their opponent, Amarillo has won back-to-back games while tallying fewer hits.
String Em' Together: The current three game winning streak is the longest since the team won four straight from 5/15 - 5/19 with two wins against Wichita before taking the first two games from Midland in the first series between these teams.
Chase For The Oil Pan Cup: The chase for the Oil-Pan cup continues in 2021 after the Sod Poodles took the inaugural 2019 season race 17-12. The Oil-Pan Cup is a season-long rivalry between Amarillo and Midland. Currently, the series in 2021 between the squads stands at 4-3 in Amarillo's favor after splitting the first six games before tonight's series opening win.
Been A While: Michael De La Cruz hit his first triple since 2018 when his fly ball caromed off the wall in center field in the second inning.
