Fresno, CA. The 7th ranked San Jose Skyrockets (11-3) swept their two-game series against the Fresno Heatwave with the final score of 134-90. After beating Fresno the night before by 19 points, the Skyrockets did not start well, falling behind 26-29 at the end of the first quarter. However, the Skyrockets regouped in the second quarter resulting in a 63-54 halftime lead.
Again, the Skyrockets played with balanced scoring with seven players in double figures. Lamar Castile led the team with 26 points followed by matt Luedtke with 24 including 5-3 pointers. Jason Smith led San Jose's rebounding efforts with 11 while scoring 16. Point guards Todd Okeson and Anthony Lumpkin contributed 15 and 12 points respectively while power forward Rock Winston scored 13. Joe Buck displayed his consistancy with 11 and Geoff Brown had one of his best games as a Skyrocket scoring 7 points, grabbing 8 rebounds and blocking 5 shots. Newly-arrived Japanese rookie Yosuke Sugawara scored his first professional point with a free throw and had an assist.
The Skyrockets dominated the rest of the second half with a score of 100-64 at the end of the 3rd quarter. The undermanned Heatwave battled hard with several players out due to injuries, but could not make up the deficit. The Heatwave were led by Johnson with 21 points, followed by Cornelius with 18. Logan and Miller contributed 15 points each and Murray and Byrd scored 11 and 10 respectively.
The Skyrockets will next host the Bellingham Slam at the San Jose Civic Auditorium on Jan 13 and 14 for a much-anticipated match-up between the two division rivals. For tickets and more information, please visit www.sjskyrockets.com or www.abalive.com.
