Sky Sox Win Series With 8-3 Victory Over River Cats

The Colorado Springs Sky Sox (50-42) defeated the Sacramento River Cats (48-45) by the score of 8-3 on Wednesday afternoon at Security Service Field in front of 3,039 fans. Jeff Manship (4-7) took the mound for the Sky Sox after regularly schedule starter Juan Nicasio was a scratch and turned in his best outing of the season en route to the victory. With the win, the Sox took the three game series two games to one.

Manship gave up two doubles in the first inning to let the Cats take an early 1-0 lead but was dealing after that. Scott Moore plated Jemile Weeks for that first run but Manship proceeded to retire 19 of the next 23 batters as he blanked Sacramento for the next six innings. He ran into a little trouble in the eighth after giving up a one-out walk to Weeks and an RBI double to Stephen Vogt and was lifted for reliever Nick Schmidt. Schmidt gave up a single to Moore to score Vogt but retired the next two batters to end the frame. Manship ended up tossing a season-high 7.1 innings and gave up just three runs, two earned, on seven hits to go along with one walk and four punchouts.

The Sky Sox bats would provide more than enough offense for Manship as they pounded out 12 hits against River Cats pitchers. In the third, the Sox scored five runs off lefty Andrew Werner (7-12) as they batted around in the and took a 5-1 lead. Four straight batters plated runs in the inning with Hernan Iribarren singling in the first two. Ryan Wheeler, Xavier Nady and Ben Paulsen each drove in one apiece to round out the scoring. Paulsen's RBI came on a double to left center which gives him a team-leading 25 doubles. He also leads the PCL with 46 extra base hits.

Three more runs came across in the fourth on an RBI double by Charlie Culberson and RBI singles by Iribarren and Nady to round at the Sox scoring.

The Sky Sox wrap up their longest home stand of the season as the Salt Lake Bees come to town for a four-game series starting tomorrow night. RH Chris Volstad (5-1, 4.76) will take the hill for the Sky Sox against LH Dustin Richardson (2-0, 2.20). Game time is set for 7:05 PM.

Sky Sox Notes: The last time Manship threw seven or more innings was on May 21st, 2012 as a member of the Rochester Red Wings as he threw 7.0 innings versus the Gwinnet Braves. His last outing of more than seven innings was a complete-game, four-hit shutout versus Norfolk on June 3, 2010... With the 8-3 win over the left Werner, the Sky Sox are now 11-5 against southpaws this year... Ryan Wheeler's RBI single in the third extended his hitting streak to 16 games
