After scoring only 17 runs in their past seven games, the Tucson Padres exploded for 11 runs on 14 hits to defeat the Tacoma Rainiers 11-5 Tuesday at Kino Stadium. The win also moved Tucson's first place lead to 2.5 games in front of Sacramento and Las Vegas.
Brandon Allen hit the second grand slam of the season for the Padres in the first to hand Tucson an early lead. The home run was Allen's tenth of the year. After Jonathan Galvez stole his team-leading 18th base to start the bottom of the second, Jaff Decker drove him in with an RBI single to center. Two batters later, Dean Anna's two-out RBI double extended the Padres advantage to 6-0.
The Rainiers batted around in the fourth, coming up with four runs on four hits to cut score to 6-4. Tucson answered in the bottom half of the inning with three runs, including an RBI triple from Dean Anna and Yonder Alonso's RBI single. Anna fell a home run short of the cycle, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs.
The Padres added two more runs in the sixth on another Alonso RBI hit and Gregorio Petit's RBI single to extend his hitting streak to 11 games. Alonso finished his second rehab start going 4-for-4 with two RBIs. Tacoma's final run scored in the eighth on a Colt Hynes throwing error.
Brad Boxberger won his second game of the season after pitching 2.1 scoreless innings of relief with four strikeouts. Andrew Carraway was charged with the loss after surrendering nine runs on 11 hits. Tucson starter Burch Smith went 3.2 innings and allowed three earned runs on four hits.
