Sky Sign Guard Jia Perkins To Multi-Year Extension

CHICAGO, September 11, 2009 - Chicago Sky Head Coach and General Manager Steven Key announced today that the team has signed guard Jia Perkins to a multi-year contract extension. Per team policy, terms of the contract have not been released.

Perkins, a five-year WNBA veteran was drafted in the 3rd round of the 2004 draft by the Charlotte Sting. Perkins played her first full season in the WNBA with the Chicago Sky after being selected in the 2005 WNBA Expansion Draft.

In 2009, Perkins made her first WNBA All-Star appearance and is on pace to start all 34 games for the second consecutive season. The 5-8 guard is currently averaging 13.5 points, 3.4 rebounds per game and is 4th in the league in steals averaging 2.15 per game.

"Perkins has grown into an unstoppable offensive threat and an aggressive defensive stopper during her time in Chicago," said Key. "There hasn't been a season that she hasn't progressed into a better player, both on and off the court. She's an exciting player to watch, whether she's driving the lane or grabbing a steal. We're looking forward to having her back for seasons to come as we continue to build on a strong foundation at the Sky"

Perkins missed most of the 2004 season due to the birth of her daughter on June 4. Perkins has averaged 11.2 points and 3.1 rebounds throughout her career. In 2008, Perkins started a career-best 34 games for Chicago and averaged a career-high 17 points and 4.0 rebounds per game.
