Chicago Sky News Release

CHICAGO - The Chicago Sky has selected Elgin High School as the sixth weekly winner of its 2017 "High School Team of the Week" program presented by Robert Morris University Illinois. The Lady Maroons receive this honor after being nominated for their accomplishments on the court, in the classroom and in the community.

Many of the girls in the Elgin High School Girl's Basketball Program had never played basketball before they started high school. However, as a group they have made great strides as basketball players and as young ladies. Their self-esteem and confidence has risen to new levels and the girls credit this to their participation in the game of basketball and the lessons it teaches. Their biggest accomplishments were defeating Westminster Christian High School 43-39 on January 13th, 2017 and coming in 5th place in the Annual Elgin City Classic Tournament. The Lady Maroons record is currently 5-17.

The Lady Maroons also pride themselves on being great ambassadors for Elgin High School and their community. They represent themselves, their family, their team, the basketball program, their high school and their community to their highest potential. They are a diverse group of young ladies that came from a variety of different backgrounds, learning how to become one unit in order for the team to work towards a common goal. One of those areas where they aim for success is in the classroom, where the Lady Maroons average a 3.8 GPA on a 4.0 scale.

The girls in the Elgin High School Girl's Basketball Program are involved in a variety of different volunteer and community service work activities in both the high school and the community. Members of the basketball program have organized and participated in the Maroon Buddies program. Maroon Buddies pair students for the development of one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. They have helped organize, and are participating in a Relay for Life Cancer Fundraiser. The Lady Maroons have also participated in the Pay It Forward Tour, which helps rebuild disadvantaged communities around the country.

Supported by Illinois Bone and Joint Institute, each Chicago Sky "High School Team of the Week" award winner will be invited to enjoy a Chicago Sky game, where they will have the opportunity to watch the world's best female basketball players. At halftime of the game, the team will be honored at center court.

All teams that compete in IHSA class 1A, 2A, 3A or 4A competitions are eligible to win a weekly honor. Nominations from parents, coaches, school faculty members and players are welcome and should be completed on the Chicago Sky website (www.chicagosky.net) through February 22.

At the end of the 10-week program, each weekly winning team will be entered to win the "High School Team of the Year" award for 2017. The winner will be determined through an online voting process on the Sky's website (www.chicagosky.net). The winning team will be announced on Opening Night 2017.
