Worcester Tornadoes News Release

Worcester, MA - June 25th, 2009 - The Worcester Tornadoes announced today that their July 4th series will include a number of promotions and events geared toward making family fun available to all during the holiday.

For the first week of July (June 30-July 7), the Worcester Tornadoes will offer any available seat in the stadium, from front row to standing room, to current members of the armed forces and veterans for only $5. Fans attending the week's games will have the opportunity to recycle their used and unwanted cell phones as part of the Cell Phones for Soldiers program. In addition to the chance to save, July 3rd will play host to the Tornadoes' official Independence Day Atlas Fireworks Display, sponsored by Price Chopper.

Also on July 3rd, the Tornadoes along with Major League Baseball will raise awareness and financial support for organizations leading the fight against ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), otherwise known as "Lou Gehrig's Disease," with a new charitable campaign, "4♦ALS Awareness." MLB is working with four leading organizations - The ALS Association, ALS TDI, Augie's Quest (the Muscular Dystrophy Association's ALS research initiative) and Project A.L.S. - whose primary goal is to find a cure for ALS. The initiative will culminate on July 4, 2009, which is the 70th anniversary of Lou Gehrig's famous farewell speech at Yankee Stadium. The Tornadoes will team with the ALS Association of Massachusetts for a jersey auction benefit which will include items signed by Red Sox greats such as Rich Gedman, Jim Rich, and Curt Schilling.

ALS destroys the nerve cells controlling muscles, ultimately causing complete paralysis. Average life expectancy is three to five years after diagnosis. "We are honored and pleased to have the opportunity to join these four important organizations in an attempt to make progress in the fight against ALS, a disease that is associated with one of the greatest players in baseball history," said MLB Commissioner Bud Selig. "Lou Gehrig displayed tremendous courage and strength in the face of a debilitating illness, and his speech 70 years ago still stands as one of the defining moments in baseball history."

On July 4th, the Tornadoes will welcome back skydiving to Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field as Jumptown USA provides a pregame skydiving show. Last season the Jumptown team successfully delivered the American flag, landing squarely on target place in centerfield. This year the Jumptown USA team is sure to put on another amazing show.

The Worcester Tornadoes' Fifth Anniversary Season is currently underway and thousands of fans have already enjoyed a game at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field. With the Worcester Tornadoes battling for first place in the Can-Am League, and lots of great promotions coming up Tornadoes tickets are going faster than ever.
