York Revolution News Release
York, Pa.- An extras-forcing rally was not enough as the Sugar Land Skeeters beat the York Revolution 8-6 in 10 innings to sweep the best-of-five Freedom Division Championship Series on Friday night in front of 7,051 fans at PeoplesBank Park.
The Skeeters now move on to the Atlantic League Championship Series, where they will face either the Long Island Ducks or Somerset Patriots in pursuit of their first-ever league crown. The Patriots currently lead the Ducks 2-1 in the Liberty Division Championship Series.
The Revs' sixth-ever trip to the playoffs ends shy of the final round for the fourth time.
Ryan Mattheus earned the win with a perfect inning and a third at the end of the ninth and 10th. Mike DeMark took the loss after allowing two runs in the 10th.
Sugar Land struck first as Lance Zawadzki homered to left center to make it 1-0 in the top of the second.
The Revs got a rally going in the bottom of the fourth as Andres Perez led off with an infield single. Isaias Tejeda came up next and hit a weak groundball to the left side. Pitcher Brett Marshall's throw to first base was high, but Tejeda was called out for running outside the basepaths. Perez was then sent back to first base on the interference call, prompting an official protest from Revolution manager Mark Mason. Two batters later, Bryan Pounds socked a two-run homer just right of center, giving the Revs a dramatic 2-1 edge.
The Skeeters tied it in the fifth as Juan Martinez scored on a Rene Tosoni fielder's choice.
Controversy struck again in the top of the sixth inning as Delwyn Young walked and Zawadzki beat out an infield single. Starter Frank Gailey left the game and was immediately ejected by the home plate umpire. Manny Corpas came on in relief and converted an out on a sac bunt. Mason was then given the thumb for an argument that stopped game play for close to five minutes. When the action resumed, Corpas issued an intentional walk and got Martinez to fly out for the second out of the inning. Josh Prince then came up and belted a 2-2 pitch over the Arch Nemesis for a backbreaking grand slam to put the Skeeters up 6-2.
The Revs wasted no time clawing back as Kevin Rivers belted a two-run homer to left center in the bottom of the sixth.
Digging deep for one last burst of rally magic against Sugar Land closer Derrick Loop, Michael Rockett rolled a single up the middle with one out in the bottom of the ninth. Josh Wilson followed with a walk and both runners moved up on a groundout by Travis Witherspoon. Jared Mitchell then worked a clutch full-count walk, loading the bases and bringing up Joel Guzman. On a 1-2 pitch, Guzman hit a weak grounder that snuck through a hole into left field, scoring Rockett and Wilson to tie it at 6-6.
Perez drew another walk to load them up again and chase Loop from the game. Mattheus came on to face Tejeda and went in an immediate 3-0 hole. After taking a strike, Tejeda unleashed and lifted a ball to deep right field, but Jeremy Barfield made the catch on the warning track to force extras.
Wilfredo Rodriguez, Jeff Dominguez, and Martinez each managed one-out singles off DeMark in the 10th, bringing Prince up in another massive spot. Settling instead for patience, Prince drew a walk on the eighth pitch he saw from DeMark, forcing in the go-ahead run. A wild pitch allowed another to score and give the game its final margin.
Mattheus went through the Revs 1-2-3 in the 10th, and York's season ended six wins shy of a championship.
Prince finished the game 2-for-3 with five RBIs. Zawadzki went 2-for-5 with a pair of runs and also started double plays to end the sixth and seventh innings.
Rockett went 2-for-5 with a run for York, while Guzman, Rivers, and Pounds each notched two RBIs.
Notes: The Revs have now lost five straight playoff games, all to Sugar Land. This is the third sweep York has fallen victim to in the playoffs (2008 FDCS vs. SOM, 2012 FDCS vs. LAN). At 7,051, the Revs broke their playoff attendance record, and PeoplesBank Park saw its largest crowd since York hosted the 2011 Atlantic League All-Star Game. It was the fifth-largest stadium crowd all-time.
