SUGAR LAND, Texas - The Sugar Land Skeeters walked-off winners in an exciting 2-1 victory over the Bridgeport Bluefish. Jeff Dominguez raced home on a wild pitch to lift the Skeeters to a win in Matt Wright's final start with Sugar Land. The victory bolsters the record to 18-23 overall and 54-57 overall.
Matt Wright saved his best start of the season for his finale, scattering four hits and one run over 8.0 innings. The Skeeters all-time leader in wins struck out six and walked just one in his final start with Sugar Land. Wright holds the all-time record in strikeouts (360), wins (30), games started (70), innings pitched (404.2) and was the Skeeters Opening Day starter for the first three seasons.
The Skeeters broke the scoring seal in the bottom of the third. Denny Almonte lazered a double down the right field line and advanced to third on a throwing error from the right fielder. Amadeo Zazueta poked a single back up the middle to bring in Almonte and give Sugar Land a 1-0 advantage.
Bridgeport pushed across the equalizer in the top of the fourth. After Wright had retired the first 10 batters of the game, Ethan Chapman laid down a bunt single to break up the no hitter and stole second to move into scoring position. Wright struck out the next batter, but gave up a single up the middle to Wilson Batista to plate Chapman and tie the game at one.
Wright escaped a pair of jams after giving up leadoff doubles in the seventh and eighth. Josh Prince doubled into the left-center alley in the top of the seventh, but a pair of flyouts and a groundout ended that rally and Wilson Valdez doubled down the left field line to start the eighth. Following a flyout that allowed Valdez to move to third, Matt Burns missed on a suicide squeeze attempt, allowing catcher Chris Wallace to run him back to third before firing to third baseman Patrick Palmeiro to erase the threat.
With fireworks looming, the Skeeters provided ninth-inning fireworks of their own to walk-off winners. Jeff Dominguez beat out an infield single and aggressive base running allowed the outfielder to go first-to-third on a single from Travis Scott. Delwyn Young was issued an intentional walk to load the bases. With an 0-2 count, Steven Ames threw a 55-foot breaking ball, bouncing away from the catcher and allowing Dominguez to sprint home for the 2-1 win.
Ramon Delgado picked up his second victory of the season, improving to 2-0 with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
