Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
(Sugar Land, TX.) - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (7-13) dropped game six against the Sugar Land Skeeters (14-7) 10-4.
With the help of an error, the Blue Crabs took an early lead in the game. Johnny Bladel led off the game with a single, before an error by the first baseman allowed him to score all the way from first. Ryan Strausborger was next, singling to score Devon Rodriguez for the second run of the game. They added another run in the second inning when Rodriguez drove in Edwin Garcia on a single.
The Skeeters fought back with two of their own in the bottom of the second. Albert Cordero singled to start the frame, moving around to third on a double from Anthony Giansanti. Courtney Hawkins followed with another double, scoring both runners to cut the score to 3-2. They added two more in the third inning, with the first coming on an RBI single from Kyle Kubitza. Kubitza came around to score on a Cordero single, putting Sugar Land ahead for the first time in the game.
The Blue Crabs tied the game on a Rodriguez sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth, before the Skeeters would immediately take it back. A hit-by-pitch and back-to-back singles started the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases with nobody out. Kubitza would follow that with an eight-pitch at-bat, which resulted in a grand slam for the Skeeters right-fielder. The homerun was Kubitza's third of the season, and resulted in an 8-4 lead for Sugar Land.
The Skeeters bullpen would dominate from that point on in the game, tossing four scoreless innings while allowing just two hits. The offense would add two more runs in the game, the first of which came on a double from Hawkins that scored Cordero.
The final run in the game came on a bases-loaded single from Matt Chavez, scoring Denis Phipps to give Sugar Land a 10-4 lead. The closer, Felipe Paulino, came on for the ninth, and worked a 1-2-3 inning to finish off the victory.
The Blue Crabs return to action Sunday, May 20th for finale of the seven-game road series against the Skeeters. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 P.M. on Sunday at Constellation Field.
