(Central Islip, N.Y.) - The Long Island Ducks today announced the signing of right-handed pitcher Chris Pike. He begins his first season with the Ducks and fifth of professional baseball.
Pike is the sixth Ducks 2018 Open Tryout participant to be signed by an Atlantic League team this season. He is the fourth to join Long Island, who earlier this year signed right-handed pitcher Jason Creasy, outfielder Robert Garcia and left-handed pitcher Tyler Honahan. Right-handed pitchers Junior Rincon and Matt Vogel were both signed by the York Revolution in 2018. Long Island held its Open Player Tryout on Saturday, April 14th at Bethpage Ballpark.
Pike spent the first four seasons of his career in the Tampa Bay Rays organization, reaching as high as Triple-A in 2017. He compiled a 3.96 ERA, three complete games, one shutout, one save and 245 strikeouts over 74 games (69 starts). The 25-year-old was named a Midwest League Mid-Season All-Star in 2015 and posted a 10-7 record with a 3.13 ERA and 83 strikeouts over 22 starts that season.
Prior to his professional career, Pike played his amateur baseball locally. He attended Southampton High School where he led the Mariners to back-to-back Long Island championships. He then played collegiate baseball for three seasons at Fordham University in the Bronx before attending Oklahoma City University where he threw a perfect game and a no-hitter in consecutive starts. Pike was originally drafted by the Rays in the ninth round of the 2014 amateur draft.
