Inland Empire 66ers News Release
San Bernardino, CA- The Inland Empire 66ers of San Bernardino jumped in front of Modesto 3-0 before an out had been recorded by the Nuts in the bottom of the first and then cruised to a 9-1 win completing a three-game sweep. The 66ers (59-55, 26-18) got a big night at the plate from David MacKinnon and a strong start from Simon Mathews (4-3) as Inland Empire has now won four consecutive games and allowed just one run in that span.
After Modesto (46-68, 16-28) starter Nick Wells (4-3) gave up hits to Connor Justus and Brendon Sanger to open the home half of the first, MacKinnon unloaded his first hit of the night, a three-run homer to left. It was his third of the year and second in the series. The Nuts did score a run in the top of the third on an RBI infield hit by Kevin Santa making it 3-1 against Mathews, it snapped the Sixers' consecutive scoreless innings streak a 31.2 innings; it was the only run Modesto would score. Mathews went 6.2IP giving up the run on three hits, a walk and fanning four. He's allowed five earned runs over his last five outings spanning 30.1 IP. Inland Empire got two more in the runs in the bottom of the third when MacKinnon hit the first of his two doubles on the night and came home on Richie Fecteau's RBI triple. Fecteau had a three-bagger in all three games of the series. Zane Gurwitz' fielders' choice brought home Fecteau making it 5-1. MacKinnon walked to open the fifth and eventually scored on Franklin Navarro's two-run double. Navarro scored making it 8-1 on Bernabe Camargo's RBI single. Inland Empire capped the scoring in the sixth when Brendon Sanger, who had walked, moved to third on MacKinnon's second double of the affair. Sanger then came home on Fecteau's RBI groundout to first making it 9-1. MacKinnon finished 3-for-4, with three runs scored, a walk, two doubles, a homer and 3RBI. Eduardo Rivera and Brett Hanewich combined for 2.1 scoreless innings of relief.
