Inland Empire 66ers News Release
San Bernardino, CA - The Inland Empire 66ers of San Bernardino pitching trio of Erik Manoah, Jorge Tavarez (3-1) and Mike Kaelin were dominant on Friday in front of 5,121 fans at San Manuel Stadium as the Sixers shutout the Modesto Nuts 5-0. The Inland Empire (57-55, 24-18) offense was led by the pitcher's battery-mate Julian Leon who tagged a pair of homers in the victory, the 66ers second consecutive shutout after blanking Lancaster 1-0 on Friday.
Manoah was perfect through three innings and did not allow a baserunner until a two-out walk in the fourth inning. Leon got the Sixers going in the third at the plate after Brendon Sanger singled (his second hit of the night), the 66ers backstop launched a Ljay Newsome pitch off the video board in right field for a 2-0 lead. David Mackinnon followed the very next batter with a solo bomb to left and a 3-0 advantage. It was MacKinnon's second with Inland Empire. With two down in the fifth the Nuts (46-66, 16-26) got a double from Jack Larsen and a pair of walks loaded the bags. Manoah was lifted and Tavarez came in and struck out Anthony Jimenez to end the threat. Leon struck again in the fifth tagging a solo homer to left, his ninth of the year, making it 4-0 and giving him three RBI on the night. It was Leon's first multi-homer game in his career and gives him his season-best seven consecutive games with a hit. Tavarez gave up a leadoff double to Joe Rizzo in the sixth but struck out the next three batters; Inland Empire pitching fanned nine batters on the night. Richie Fecteau tripled for IE in the seventh, his second hit of the game and came home on DJ Jenkins sacrifice safety squeeze giving the Sixers a 5-0 advantage. Mike Kaelin allowed one hit in his two innings to finish of the Sixers' 12th shutout of the year, matching Rancho Cucamonga for the league lead. Inland Empire pitching has not allowed a run in 19-consecutive frames and has struck out 20 batters while allowing just three hits and three walks in its last two games.
The Sixers open a series versus Modesto on Friday at 7:05 pm. The contest can be heard live at 66ers.com.
