Chico Outlaws News Release

SAN DIEGO, CA - The Chico Outlaws opened a three-game series with San Diego on a positive note Tuesday, using an eight hit attack and six San Diego errors to post a 7-3 victory over the Surf Dawgs at Tony Gwynn Stadium on the San Diego State campus.

Outlaws pitcher Mike Cosgrove was one of the big stories of the night - a 10-year veteran, Cosgrove made just his second career start (and first since his rookie year in 1997) and survived a shaky 1st inning (walking the bases loaded) to give Chico a quality outing. San Diego starter Aaron Wilson also had early control problems, and it led to the Outlaws first run in the opening frame - Wilson walked Bobby Gandolfo and Desi Wilson...then after Mike Mallory singled to load the bases, Craig Kuzmic was issued a free pass to force Gandolfo home. Cosgrove made the 1-0 stand up until the 3rd inning when San Diego strung together five straight singles - Seth Pietsch, Scott Goodman and Nick Guerra delivering RBI hits to put the Surf Dawgs in front 3-1.

Chico pulled even in the 5th inning when Mallory tripled home Gandolfo, then scored when Surf Dawgs second baseman Adam Mandel booted Kuzmic's two-out grounder. In the 6th the Outlaws went ahead to stay when Lino Garcia walked, went to third on a throwing error by Matt Wheatland and scored on a Jesse Kovacs sacrifice fly. While Cosgrove kept San Diego off the scoreboard, Chico put the game away in the 7th - four Surf Dawgs errors and an RBI single by Kovacs led to three unearned runs and a 7-3 lead. Outlaws relievers George Huguet and Jake McKinley combined to shut out San Diego over the final three innings to lock down Chico's second straight win and third victory in the last four games.

Cosgrove (1-0) struck out six in his six innings of work to earn the win...Will Carr (0-1), the second of three San Diego pitchers, took the loss. Mallory and Steve Booker had two hits apiece to lead the Outlaws offensively...Victor Roldan had three of the Surf Dawgs ten hits on the night. With Tuesday's win the Outlaws improved to 9-10 on the season, while San Diego fell to 7-11 for the year. Game two of the series is scheduled for Wednesday, with left-hander Robert Anaya (0-1) getting the start for Chico...the Surf Dawgs are expected to send lefty Justin Ottman (1-1) to the mound. Game time is 7:05pm.
