Six-Run Seventh Gives Suns Victory

With a six-run seventh inning, the Hagerstown Suns won their third straight game as they defeated the Augusta GreenJackets 7-2 on Wednesday night.

The scoreless tie was broken in the fourth by the Suns. With Destin Hood on third, right fielder Marcus Jones singled to right off Zach Wheeler to score Hood, giving Hagerstown a 1-0 lead.

Augusta responded in the top of the fifth. Getting the bases loaded with two outs, Suns starting pitcher Paul Demny walked Dan Cook to score Evan Crawford on third to tie the game. After Mitchell Clegg (2-0) replaced Demny on the mound, Thomas Joseph singled up the middle. After Ryan Cavan scored from third, Nick Liles attempted to score from second, but was thrown out in the a rundown, tagged out by Francisco Soriano who was covering third. Demny finished with two runs charged in four and two-thirds innings.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Suns got their offense going, getting runners on the corners with one out. Soriano doubled to right off Mitch Lively (0-1) to score Jones and put Eury Perez on third. After Sean Nicol was intentionally walked, Steven Souza singled up the middle off Jose Casilla to score Perez for the 3-2 lead. With Justin Bloxom up, Casilla threw a wild pitch, scoring Soriano and placing runners on second and third. Bloxom proceeded to single up the middle, scoring Nicol and Souza. Hagerstown completed the rally two batters later with Ramirez hitting a double up the middle to score Bloxom from second. The six-run inning put Hagerstown up 7-2.

Clegg finished the game for the victory. He pitched four-and-a-third, allowing just two hits with five strikeouts.

Wheeler got a no decision after 4.2 innings pitched with one unearned run allowed. Lively got the loss with four runs charged to him in one and two-thirds. Casilla also went 1.2 innings, allowing two runs.

The Suns improve to 11-9 while the GreenJackets fall to 12-9. Game two of the four-game set will be on Thursday at 6:35 p.m. Gates to Municipal Stadium open at 5:35 p.m.
