Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
In a game that had just about a little of everything, the Lakewood BlueClaws take game one of a four game series in ten innings by the score of 4-3 against the Kannapolis Intimidators on Wednesday night.
The Intimidators (9-12) took the lead on a solo home run in the fourth inning by Ian Gac, but in the top of the next inning, the BlueClaws (12-9) scored two on starter Matt Hopps to take a 2-1 lead. Hopps was tremendous over seven innings, allowing just five hits and two runs. His counterpart, Nick Hernandez was equally as good through six, allowing just the home run to Gac while striking out seven.
The Intimidators took the lead in the seventh as Jose Vargas led off with a double, moved to third on a ground ball in the infield and scored on another grounder. With Daniel Wagner on first and Miguel Gonzalez at the plate, Gonzalez doubled to the right field corner, scoring Wagner and taking a 3-2 lead to the top of the eighth.
In the eighth off reliever Ryan Buch, the BlueClaws had their leadoff batter Domingo Santana walk, followed by a strikeout and Jiwan James reaching on a fielding error. After Anthony Hewitt was hit by a pitch, Jeremy Barnes flew out to center. Trayce Thompson caught the ball and threw the runner out going from second to third, however, the tag was applied after the runner scored from third, tying the game at three.
After the Intimidators failed to score with two on and no out in the eighth, the game went to extras after a clean ninth. In the top of the tenth off Drew O'Neil (1-1), Santana again walked, followed by a sacrifice bunt. The Intimidators were going to intentionally walk James, but Gonzalez then threw down to second to try and get the runner who had taken a secondary lead on one of the intentional balls. The ball went into centerfield and the pinch runner went to third. James then was pitched to and walked anyway before a slow roller was hit in the infield, scoring the runner from third, who was there on the error. The inning ended on a strikeout.
The Intimidators had a runner on second in the tenth with no outs after Kyle Colligan singled and stole second but could not push him home.
The loss is the third in a row for the Intimidators and the tenth at home in 13 games.
The Intimidators and BlueClaws will continue their series on Thursday at 7:05 pm as Justin Collop will oppose Colby Shreve.
