Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
Savannah, GA - Armando Rodriguez silenced the Lexington Legends' bats over six and two thirds innings to lead the first place Savannah Sand Gnats (13-8) to a 4-1 win Wednesday night at Historic Grayson Stadium. Rodriguez finished with seven strikeouts against just two walks in his longest outing of the 2010 season.
Rodriguez allowed just one hit through the first five innings in a pitcher's duel against the Legends' Tanner Bushue. The Gnats broke through in the fifth inning when Cesar Puello manufactured a run with his speed. He bunted for a single, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error on catcher Jonathan Fixler. Alonzo Harris brought him home with a sacrifice fly to centerfield. The Legends evened the game at 1-1 in the top of the sixth. Left fielder JD Martinez, who entered the game third in the SAL in batting average, drove a double to left center to score second baseman Jose Altuve who had singled earlier in the frame.
Savannah took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth. SS Wilmer Flores, who was 3-4, crushed a triple off the base of the left field wall. Jefry Marte's line drive single off the glove of Lexington third baseman Jonathan Meyer scored Flores. Savannah added two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth with the help of a Lexington error and a wild pitch.
The Savannah bullpen contributed 2.1 scoreless innings. Erik Turgeon worked out of a bases loaded jam in the seventh inning and then enjoyed an easy eighth before handing the ball to Michael Powers who threw a 1-2-3 ninth for his third save of the year.
On Thirsty Thursday at Grayson Stadium, the Gnats will hand the ball to Jimmy Fuller (3-1, 1.26) who will face RHP Zach Grimmett (0-0, 0.00) for the Lexington Legends.
