Six Run First Inning Powers Jaxx by Mudcats, 7-4

JACKSON, TENN. (AUGUST 6, 2009) - The Diamond Jaxx (21-20) open the homestand at Pringles Park with a victory on Thursday night, beating the Carolina Mudcats (15-26), 7-4. The Jaxx used a six run first inning and never looked back, evening the season series with Carolina at 3-3. Matt Mangini nailed his ninth homerun of the season in the six run first inning and went 2-for-4 with the homer and three RBI. Ezequiel Carrera is now 12-for-25 since returning from the DL on Sunday, and collected a three hit game with an RBI on Thursday night. The Jaxx remain two games back of Chattanooga in the North Division and one game back of second place Tennessee.

The Jaxx wasted no time on Thursday night, putting six runs on the board in the first inning. Ezequiel Carrera, Greg Halman and Johan Limonta reached on singles to load the bases. Back-to-back walks were given to Guillermo Quiroz and Marshall Hubbard by Mudcat starter, Luis Montano, scoring two runs. The Mariners 2009 2nd round pick, Rich Poythress picked up an RBI in his first Double-A at bat with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Limonta. Matt Mangini followed with a three-run homerun to right-center giving the Jaxx a 6-0 lead after one inning.

Jaxx starter, Danny Christensen (1-6) went into the sixth inning having not allowed a run, but Carolina tallied three runs in the inning. Jeff Frazier smacked his league leading 37th double bringing Zack Cozart. Later, Shaun Cumberland hit a two-run homer, cutting the Jaxx lead to 6-3.

Ezequiel Carrera hit an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth inning, plating Matt Mangini and pushing the Jaxx lead to 7-3. Carrera has 12 hits and seven RBI in six games since coming off the DL last week.

The Mudcats pulled back within three runs again in the top of the seventh, when Juan Francisco drove in Cozart with a single.

Anthony Varvaro (S, 3) came into the game in the game in the seventh inning, relieving Josh Fields, who left the game with an undisclosed injury. Varvaro went 2.1 innings and earned his sixth save of the season, although walking five, but striking out three.

The Jaxx and Mudcats play at 7:05 on Friday night with RHP Luis Munoz (4-6, 4.48) toeing the rubber for West Tenn. The Mudcats will counter with RHP Zach Ward (0-1, 18.00).
