MONTGOMERY, Ala. - A five-run sixth inning highlighted by Matt Spring's three-run homer lifted the Montgomery Biscuits past the BayBears on Thursday night at Riverwalk Stadium, 7-4.

Southpaw Tom Layne (0-1) was cruising right along in his Double-A debut as he surrendered just a run on three hits over his first five frames. In the sixth, with the BayBears (53-58, 16-25) up 3-1, Layne was bit by the base on balls as he walked Cody Cipriano with one out before letting loose a single to Matt Fields. When Cody Strait walked to load the bases, Layne was removed in favor of Kyler Newby.

Newby doused the fire with gasoline as he balked home Cipriano and unleashed a wild pitch to bring Fields home with the game-tying run. After giving J.T. Hall a free pass, Newby uncorked a titanic three-run homer to Spring, giving Montgomery (53-58, 20-21) a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

For the second straight night, the BayBears used their wheels to pick up runs as they've swiped nine bases over the last two contests. Evan Frey's bunt single kicked off the ballgame as he advanced to third on a base hit by Mark Hallberg. Pedro Ciriaco's sac fly put the BayBears on top.

Montgomery quickly tied the game in the second with a two-out RBI single by Rashad Eldridge, but the BayBears grabbed the lead back with Pete Clifford's two-out RBI knock in the third. It became 3-1 when Cyle Hankerd led off the fourth with a double and scored on a sac fly by Chris Rahl.

Ryan Reid worked the seventh for the Biscuits in place of Brandon Mann (6-7) who put together the definition of a quality start with three runs allowed in six innings. Reid gave up a run on three singles as Hallberg brought Rahl home to pull the BayBears within two.

Montgomery tallied an insurance run in the eighth against Roque Mercedes with Eldridge singling home Strait. Paul Phillips (S, 6) tossed two scoreless frames to nail it down for Montgomery.

The Mobile BayBears have sent nearly 100 players to the major leagues. They'll play game two of their five-game set with the Biscuits on Friday night at 7:05 with Wes Roemer (6-7, 4.08) getting the start. The BayBears return home on Wednesday, August 12 to take on the Huntsville Stars. For Hank Aaron Stadium tickets, call (251) 479-BEAR or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.
