
Six Run 8th Inning Downs 'Frogs

Wisconsin Rapids, WI - July 4th, 2011 - The Wisconsin Rapids Rafters blew open a one-run game in the 8th inning with six runs to beat the Green Bay Bullfrogs 10-3 on Monday afternoon. The Rafters scored three runs in the first inning against starter Billy Moon and six runs against closer John Colella in the 8th.
Moon made his first start of the year on Monday and went three innings, allowing four runs. The first three runners reached against the starter Moon. Alex Edward hit an RBI single and scored on a passed ball before an RBI ground out from Kyle Peterson.
The Bullfrogs got a run back in the third inning when they put two runners in scoring position with one out. Jacob May had an RBI ground out. Moon gave up one more run in the bottom half of the third. Alex Edward led the inning off with a walk. He moved to second base on a passed ball, stole third and came into score on an error by Ty Filliben who had the throw tip off his glove and into left field.
Andy Hunter came into pitch for the Bullfrogs after that and threw four scoreless innings. He had three strike outs and allowed just one infield single. The 'Frogs pulled to within one run in the fifth inning. Phillip Ervin and Filliben led the inning off with a couple of singles and were sacrificed into scoring position by Steven Halcomb. Ryan Allgrove drove them both in with a two-RBI single.
Green Bay had some chances to tie the game. In the sixth Duncan McAlpine reached third base with one out and was stranded there. In the seventh inning, Allgrove reached on an error with one out. Jacob May was the next hitter and drove a double down the line but Allgrove got caught in a run down between third and home before he was tagged out before the Bullfrogs stranded May in scoring position at the end of the seventh.
The 'Frogs brought John Colella in for the top of the 8th inning. The closer gave up two home runs, two doubles, two walks and six runs as the Rafters took the 10-3 lead for good. Field Manager Jordan Bischel was ejected after the eighth inning for arguing a tag play between first and second.
Green Bay falls to 18-13 in the first half. They are 1.5 games back of the Madison Mallards who play at 6:35 pm on Monday. The 'Frogs and the Rafters play game two of the three-game series on Tuesday at 7:05 pm.
