South Carolina Stingrays News Release
Toledo, OH - Forward Wayne Simpson recorded a goal and an assist to help the South Carolina Stingrays (9-5) to a 2-1 victory over the Toledo Walleye (8-7) in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals at the Huntington Center Friday night. The Stingrays lead the best-of-seven series 1-0.
Simpson kicked off the scoring 9:09 into the contest lifting a shot over Walleye netminder Jeff Lerg (L, 22 saves on 24 shots) from the top of the goal crease. Forward Andrew Rowe and defenseman Lee Moffie added assists.
The Walleye jumped on the scoreboard at 11:58 of the second period when defenseman Joe Stejskal blasted a shot over the glove of Stingrays goaltender Jeff Jakaitis (W, 29 saves on 30 shots) from the right-wing point. The Stingrays responded with a power-play goal with 3.3 seconds left in the period as defenseman Michal Cajkovsky jumped on a loose puck and buried it over the glove of Lerg off the right-wing faceoff circle. Defenseman Drew MacKenzie and Simpson picked up assists.
In the third period, the Walleyed poured on the pressure firing 10 shots towards Jakaitis and pulled Lerg late in the contest while on the power-play for a 6-on-4 attack, but could not find the equalizing marker.
