Everett Silvertips News Release
Everett, Wash. - The Everett Silvertips lost to the Prince George Cougars 3-1 on Wednesday night in front of 6,188 fans inside of the Everett Events Center. Everett's record is now 53-14-1-2 (109 pts) overall and 30-4-0-1 at home. With the loss, they still complete their regular season series record against the Cougars 3-2.
The story of the first period for the Silvertips was penalty killing. They had to attempt to fend off Prince George power plays three different times throughout the heart of the period including over a minute-and-a-half of being down two skaters. Jared Walker scored for the Cougars on their first advantage, but the Silvertips held strong on the following two.
Prince George opened up a two goal buffer within the first half-minute of the second period on a Greg Gardner goal. The two teams would exchange penalties in the first handful of minutes which included a pair of 4-on-4 situations, but neither side garnered a clear advantage with the extra room to work with. The Cougars did produce a chance on a later power play though. However, Everett goaltender Leland Irving was able to sprawl out his right pad to keep the puck out of the net.
That Irving save proved to be even bigger when the Silvertips finally got on the board midway through the final period to pull within one. Dan Gendur wired a shot that went wide right of the net and hit off the glass. On the ricochet, the puck squeaked between the post and Cougars goalie Scott Bowles who had turned to the edge of the crease. Players from both teams began to converge on the loose puck but it was Kyle Beach who got to it first and popped it in at the 11:07 mark. Tyler Hlookoff was scored with the secondary assist which goes down as his first career Western Hockey League point in his seventh career game.
Irving played strong the rest of the period to maintain his team's chance at the possible comeback. However, just moments after he was pulled late in the period for the extra skater, Prince George would solidify their win. Dana Tyrell found the empty net to finalize the 3-1 score.
The Silvertips will hit the road for their next game on Friday night, March 16th. They will be making their final regular season visit to the Toyota Center in Kennewick, Wash. to take on the Tri-City Americans. It will also be the final regular season meeting overall between the two teams with the face-off scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
The Silvertips return home for their final regular season home game on Saturday night, March 17th, when they welcome the Vancouver Giants. Game time is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. inside of the Everett Events Center. The Silvertips first play-off game will be at the EEC on Friday night, March 23rd, at 7:35 p.m. Their opponent for that first round series will be the Spokane Chiefs.
