Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
The Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings have announced that an 18-year old grade 12 student from Elkhorn has been chosen the 2007 winner of the Maggie Janz Memorial Scholarship.
Jordan Troy Mitchell, who will graduate from Elkhorn School this June, plans to attend Brandon University this fall. He becomes the thirteenth winner of this prestigious Scholarship, which was established several years ago in honour of the former Wheat King volunteer, who served as "director of operations" for the hockey club's 50/50 program.
In addition to serving as President of Elkhorn School Student Council, Jordan is heavily involved in sports. A two-time winner of the Elkhorn High School Male Athlete of the Year, Jordan is active in volleyball, badminton, baseball and hockey. In fact, this past winter, he played for both the Reston / Pierson High School hockey team as well as the Elkhorn / Miniota team in the North Central Hockey League.
"Jordan works hard in school and in the community," says Elkhorn School principal Kevin Tutthill. "He is a very competent student who often leads his class in academic pursuits as well."
Besides his role both on the field and on the ice, Jordan can be found assisting others. From teaching power skating and helping out area hockey teams, to serving as an on ice official throughout the winter. As well, he has been active in the community's recycle programs as well as spending time with elderly residents with gardening, snow shoveling and other odd jobs that need to be done.
"I pride myself in giving back to my community to the best of my ability," says Mitchell, who was recently chosen the Virden and Area Optimist Youth of the Year Award winner, "so that the future generations have a school, a rink....the way my parents, grandparents and previous generations had volunteered so that I would have a school, a rink and community."
The Maggie Janz Memorial Scholarship is based on the hockey club's share of Friday night's 50/50 ticket sales. In addition to the scholarship, Bob Janz, Maggie's husband will make a special presentation to Jordan during the first intermission of Friday's Western Hockey League game between the Wheat Kings and Regina Pats.
Maggie Janz was a victim of a fatal bus crash during a European vacation in 1994.
Friday night is the first of a weekend home and home series with the Pats and is Brandon's final home game of the regular season. Friday is also Tim Hortons Fan Appreciation Day, with $2,000 in prizes to be won including coffee makers, a Team Canada prize package from Sport Chek, hockey bags from Labatts, a Turbo Tanning prize package from Tan FX, Sport bags from Meyers Norris Penny and Brandon Source for Sports as well as a KOSS MP3 Audio System (valued at $250) from Canadian Tire.
Tickets to Friday's game or Brandon's first two playoff games - Friday and Saturday, March 23rd and 24th - are on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca.
