Everett Silvertips News Release
EVERETT, WA - The Everett Silvertips dropped a 4-2 decision to the Spokane Chiefs in their tenth and final head-to-head meeting of the season Wednesday night at Comcast Arena. The 'Tips will now play six straight road games before returning to their home ice to face Vancouver on February 11.
Ryan Murray and Josh Birkholz scored goals for the Silvertips, who also got 32 saves from Austin Lotz in goal. Spokane scored twice on seven powerplay opportunities, while Everett finished 0 for 2 on the night.
The Silvertips jumped out to a 1-0 lead after creating a neutral zone turnover, as Ryan Murray's blast from the point beat Mac Engel just inside the post to open the scoring for Everett. Spokane evened things up on the powerplay three minutes later when Todd Fiddler finished off the rebound of a Brendan Kichton point shot to tie it at one.
The Chiefs took the lead 6:48 into the second period during a double-minor powerplay as Steve Kuhn was credited with a goal during a scramble in Austin Lotz' goal crease. The 'Tips killed off two other Spokane powerplays in the middle frame, and despite being outshot 12-4, trailed only 2-1 heading into the third.
Darren Kramer tipped in another shot from just inside the blueline midway through the third period, extending the Chiefs' lead to 3-1. The Silvertips drew back within one when Josh Birkholz banged home the rebound of Cody Fowlie's long wrister with four minutes remaining. The equalizer wouldn't come however before Kuhn scored into an empty net with one second remaining to provide the final 4-2 margin for Spokane.
Austin Lotz (2-6-0-2) lost in regulation for just the third time in his last seven starts despite the 32 stops. Mac Engel (22-12-1-2) made 19 saves as the Chiefs outshot the Silvertips 36-21.
The Silvertips will now embark on their last lengthy road swing of the season, traveling to Prince George, BC to open a six-game road trip. The 'Tips and Cougars will meet both Friday and Saturday at 7:00 pm at the CN Centre, with pregame radio coverage starting at 6:30 on Fox Sports 1380 AM. Live online video of both games is also available through WHL Live.
