PEE WEE PLAYING IN ATHENS
Shannon "Pee Wee" Johnson and the rest of the U.S. Senior National Team are under way in Athens winning their first Olympic game in decisive fashion over New Zealand, 99-47, and defeating the Czech Republic in game two of the preliminaries, 80-61. They will face Korea in the third game of the preliminary round on Johnson's 30th birthday, Wednesday, August 18. The U.S. Senior National Team competed in 13 Spring Training games and two exhibition games this month prior to the Olympics. Shannon Johnson appeared in 14 of the 15 contests and started in 13 games. She averaged 6.7 points, 1.9 rebounds and 4.1 assists in 22.0 minutes in the 14 games. She looks to continue her solid play in Athens and help lead the United States to its third straight gold medal in Women's Basketball. Here is what Pee Wee's U.S. teammates are saying about her.
Tina Thompson:
"Shannon Johnson sees the floor really, really well. She's a strong point guard."
Katie Smith:
"She has an amazing athletic ability and brings a lot of overseas experience. She's always
pressing the tempo of the game and she is like a gnat on defense - she is just always there and
in her opposition's way!"
Sheryl Swoopes:
"Shannon Johnson is quick at her position, understands the game and does a great job of
getting other people involved."
Dawn Staley:
"Pee Wee is one of the most exciting players on both ends of the floor, well-deserving of her
first Olympic experience."
Yolanda Griffith:
"She is quick like lightning. The Speed Racer."
