Charlotte Sting News Release

The Charlotte Sting announced today that they have signed 5Â’8 rookie guard Jia Perkins to a multi-year contract. Per team policy, further terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“We were very happy to get a player of Jia’s quality in the third round of the draft,” said Sting General Manager and Head Coach Trudi Lacey. “She is an athletic guard who has the ability to score the ball. Jia will be another strong rookie addition to our team along with Nicole Powell, Kelly Mazzante and Tera Bjorklund.”

Perkins was selected by Charlotte in the third round (35th overall) of the 2004 WNBA Draft on April 17, 2004. A star player at Texas Tech University, Perkins left school in January and gave birth to a baby girl named Aalirah on June 4, 2004.

While at Texas Tech, Perkins averaged 15.4 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.3 assists in 115 games. Following her junior year, she earned All-Big 12 First Team and All-Big 12 Tournament Team honors. In addition, she received honorable mention honors as an Associated Press and Kodak All-American. Perkins scored in double-figures in 96 out of 115 games for the Lady Red Raiders.

The Charlotte Sting are currently tied for second place in the Eastern Conference with a 12-13 record. While the WNBA is on hiatus from games this month due to the Olympics, the Sting will practice each day at the Bobcats Basketball Center and participate in numerous community appearances throughout August. Games will resume on September 1 as Charlotte hosts the Connecticut Sun at 7 p.m. at the Charlotte Coliseum. Please call (704) 424-WNBA or log on to www.charlottesting.com for ticket information.
