Silver Sox Swing Cold in Home Opener

May 24, 2008 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Reno Silver Sox News Release

The Reno Silver Sox home opener against the Orange County Flyers was almost delayed due to the cold rainy weather, but as things cleared up the team took the field to begin its season. Weather wasn?t the only thing cold tonight as the Silver struggled at the plate getting only four hits and two runs in their 7-3 loss to the Flyers.

Steven Wright led the first inning off with a rocket triple off Flyer starting pitcher Andre Simpson (1-0), who pitched seven innings and only allowed three hits and one run. Carlos Madrid knocked in the RBI making the score 1-0 after the first.

The Silver Sox offense froze after the first inning and failed to assist starting pitcher Marc Kaiser (0-1), who allowed six hits and five runs in his six innings pitched. Orange County retaliated as Sean Lorentz hit a solo shot in the third inning, Fernando Pacheco knocked in an RBI in the fourth and Pat Breen scored on a throwing error by Silver Sox short stop Andre Alvarado making the score 3-1 Flyers after the fourth. A two run home run by Pat Breen made the score 5-1 after the sixth.

Continuing their cold streak the Silver Sox were never able to get on track as the last two runs they scored were walked in by Flyer relief pitcher Eric Sheridan. With the bases loaded 3B John Hattig grounded into a double play ending the inning much to the dismay of the hopeful fans. Silver Sox fans hoped that their team could pull off a ninth inning rally but Flyer closer Monte Mansfield quickly took care of business earning him his first save of the season.

Tomorrow the Silver Sox conclude their opening series with the Flyers in a double header that kicks off at 5 P.M. at Peccole Park in Reno.
