Chico Outlaws News Release
YUMA, AZ - For the straight night, the Chico Outlaws failed to seal the deal in their season-opening series with the Yuma Scorpions...the Outlaws let a 10-2 lead get away as Yuma scored eight runs in the 8th inning to tie the contest and the game-winner in the bottom of the 9th to pull out an 11-10 victory Friday at Desert Sun Stadium.
Rich Janeway, Thursday night's walk-off grand slam hero, put Yuma in front early with a solo homer off Chico starter Chris Malone in the bottom of the 2nd inning. The Outlaws answered with some long ball of their own - with Steve Boggs and Jesse Kovacs aboard, Jose Valdez bombed a home run over the right field wall to give Chico a 3-1 lead. Valdez delivered a two-out, two-run single in the 4th to put Chico up 5-1...then in the 6th Kovacs lined a solo homer over the right field wall and Shane Cronin singled home Todd Gossage to extend the Outlaws lead to 7-1.
Hector Bernal's solo homer (the first of his pro career) in the bottom of the 7th cut Chico's advantage to five, but the Outlaws plated three runs in the top of the 8th on RBI singles by Bryan Silverman and Eric Pringle to go up 10-2 and put the game seemingly out of reach. But in the bottom of the 8th Yuma sent 13 men to the plate, combining five hits with a walk, a hit batter and three Chico errors to score eight times to knot up the contest at 10 apiece...A.J. Valentine and Jeremy Cleveland both providing key two-run singles in the inning. After lefty reliever Neil Hayes set down Chico in the top of the 9th, the Scorpions pushed across the game-winner - with two outs and runners at second and third, Maikel Jova blooped a Jesse Oster pitch down the right-field line that landed just inside fair territory to knock in Bernal and give Yuma its second dramatic come-from-behind victory over the Outlaws in as many nights.
Hayes (1-0) - the last of five pitchers used by Yuma - got credit for the victory, with Oster (0-1) taking the loss for Chico. The Outlaws collected 14 hits in the losing effort - Valdez had three hits to go along with his five RBI, while Kovacs went 3-for-5...Cronin and Silverman also chipped in with a pair of hits. Jova had three of Yuma's 15 knocks on the night, with Janeway, Bernal, Cleveland, Henry Calderon and Hamzel Diaz contributing two hits apiece. Friday's loss dropped Chico to 0-2 on the season, while Yuma improved to 2-0 on the year. Game three of the series is scheduled for Saturday, with the Outlaws sending lefty Jason Roach to the mound; the Scorpions will counter with former major league right-hander Mike Esposito. Game time is 7:00pm; listen to all the action with the Voice of the Outlaws, Rory Miller, beginning at 6:35pm on ESPN Radio 101.7 FM and 1340 AM, or on-line at www.ChicoOutlawsBaseball.com.
