San Diego Surf Dawgs News Release

Tonight's game at Tony Gwynn Stadium was yet another close one but it was the Reno Silver Sox eventually defeating the Surf Dawgs 5-4. Justin Ottman (3-5) was saddled with the loss and Jared Bonnell (4-1) picked up the victory for Reno.

Reno got on the scoreboard first when James Shanks connected with a Justin Ottman pitch and placed it behind the left-field wall to give the Silver Sox a 1-0 lead.

The lead wouldn't last long because in the bottom of the inning Nick Guerra would hit an infield single and move to second on a throwing error. Victor Roldan cashed in on the opportunity and drove a single into right to score Guerra and tie it.

After a scoreless inning, the Silver Sox got two more in the fourth. Shanks singled and Carlos Madrid walked. Both Shanks and Madrid advanced on a sacrifice fly by Mike Done and they would both score on a Philip Grau single to open up a two-run cushion.

Masashi Chikazawa hit another home run today, this time it was a solo shot to right center field to give Reno the 4-1 advantage. The Dawgs would answer right back in the bottom half with another two out rally. With Johnny Day and Adam Mandel on first and second, Scott Goodman came through in the clutch and singled home Day. Joey Huskins followed suit and singled to right field to score Mandel and it was closed to 4-3.

Shanks, who ended up 2-for-4 with three runs and one RBI, walked in the sixth and advanced to second on a Madrid sacrifice bunt. Done came through with a double to drive Shanks in to give Reno their fifth and eventual deciding run.

A Tony Garcia home run in the seventh, his third on the season, closed it to 5-4. An eighth-inning rally was shut down when closer Scott Schneider came in with runners on the corners and two outs. He then went on to throw a perfect ninth for his league leading 13th save.

The two face off in the rubber game of the series tomorrow. A rare day game will precede a six-game, eight-day road trip. The action will start at 1:05 PT tomorrow with Ben Thurmond (5-3) taking the mound for Reno (7-8) while Chris George (1-6) will throw for San Diego (8-7).
