San Diego Surf Dawgs News Release
In a rare 1:05 start at Tony Gwynn Stadium, the Reno Silver Sox defeated the San Diego Surf Dawgs 8-3. It was Reno who came out of the gate fast, scoring two in the first inning and never looking back. Carlos Chavez (5-2) picked up win number five while Chris George (1-7) suffered his seventh loss of the 2006 season.
The early start seemed to have no effect on the Silver Sox players as they came out swinging. The first three Silver Sox batters singled, singled and doubled respectively to score one run and leave another in scoring position for Masashi Chikazawa. Chikazawa struck out but Doug Gredvig cashed in with a single to give Reno the early 2-0 lead.
Matt Maloney got things started for the Surf Dawgs in the second when he singled to left-center field. Nick Guerra strolled up and doubled in Maloney and it was 2-1. It would be the closest San Diego would come all day.
Carlos Chavez was the one keeping the Surf Dawgs in check and he did it for seven innings, allowing just the one run on five hits with three strikeouts. His teammates would give him a comfortable cushion to work with in the top of the third. Gredvig, who finished the game 3-for-5 with five RBI and one run scored, smacked his seventh home run of the year, a three-run shot to left-center and Reno led 5-1.
The Silver Sox would tack on three more and San Diego would load the bases in the ninth with no outs but only push two runs across.
Joey Huskins, 2-for-4 with one run scored, and Tony Garcia, 2-for-4 were the only Dawgs to have a multi-hit game this afternoon.
The Surf Dawgs (8-8) embark on a six-game, eight-day road trip with the first game coming in Chico on Friday night. San Diego will play in Chico over the weekend and then travel to Reno for a three-game series before returning home to face the Fullerton Flyers August 11-13.
