Syracuse Silver Knights News Release
SYRACUSE, New York - The Syracuse Silver Knights (5-5, Eastern Division #2) topped the Thruway Rival Rochester Lancers (4-6, Eastern Division #3) 21-15 at the War Memorial to move to .500 on Friday night.
Nelson Santana changed the complexion of the game when the defender turned into the target forward in the second half. The Captain picked up 2 assists in just 30 minutes in his new position.
"Everybody picked up their intensity and delivered a great performance," Tommy Tanner said. "We moved Nelson up top and it really turned that result around for us."
Despite opening the scoring on a Cory Elenio volley, Syracuse found itself in a tough hole heading into the second half. Rochester used an Andrew Hoxie double in the second quarter to take an 11-4 lead into the break.
After a back-and-forth start in the third frame, Nelson Santana helped charge the Knights comeback effort. The defender collected the ball on a Bryan O'Quinn toss and found Bo Jelovac making a run off the target. Jelovac made no mistake, tucking his drive into the far post past Lancers GK Joeseph Kapinos. The three-point strike cut the Rochester lead to 11-7 with 7:22 left in the third.
Santana did it again on the Knights' next goal, when he found Domenico Vitale all alone for a tap in at the 4:57 mark.
Vitale's effort ignited a Salt City flurry. SSK scored four goals in 1:16 of game time. Anthony Grant, Bo Jelovac and Cory Elenio made it a 15-11 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. The Silver Knights outscored the Lancers 11-0 in the third.
The Orange, Silver and Black kept hold of the result in final frame. Antonio Manfut, Marcos Chantel and Kenardo Forbes tacked on goals in the fourth to seal the score.
Bryan O'Quinn denied the Thruway Rivals on 14 occasions in the win.
Tommy Tanner is now 14-6 in his career against Rochester as the Syracuse head coach.
The Silver Knights play the back end of their back-to-back Saturday, January 10, against the Baltimore Blast at 7:35 p.m. EST in the Royal Farms Arena. Syracuse returns to the Salt City next weekend for a two-game home stand in the War Memorial against the Rochester Lancers Friday, January 16, and the Harrisburg Heat Sunday, January 18. Tickets to all Silver Knights home games will be available at the CNY Family Sports Centre, online at www.syracusesilverknights.com or over the phone at 315-303-7261.
