Rochester Lancers News Release
(Syracuse, NY) - The Rochester Lancers (4-6) couldn't hold on to an 11-4 halftime lead, eventually falling 21-15 on the road to the Syracuse Silver Knights (5-5) in MASL action. In the third game in the 2014-15 series between the upstate New York rivals, Syracuse would prevail for the second time this season. The Lancers were led offensively by Andrew Hoxie (2 goals), Mauricio Salles (1 goal and 1 assist) and Jeremy Ortiz (1 goal and 1 assist). Joey Kapinos returned to the net for the Lancers and suffered his first loss of the season while making 15 saves in the effort. The Lancers will return home tomorrow for afternoon matinee against the Detroit Waza Flo at 1pm.
A little over five minutes into the game, the Silver Knights took the lead when Corey Elenio volleyed home a rebound past Kapinos. The Lancers answered back, taking their first lead of the night with a little over three minutes left in the opening stanza when Stephen Basso rifled a shot from beyond the 3-point arc that deflected off a Syracuse defender and into the Silver Knight's goal to put the Lancers up 3-2. Later, with under 30 seconds left in the first quarter, Anthony Grant would set up Mario Swaby for the goal to put the hosts up 4-3 after fifteen minutes of action.
Just after the official's timeout midway through the second quarter, Rochester's Hoxie settled a poor clearance, turned, and fired it home to put the Lancers back in front 5-4. Thirty seconds later, Ortiz found Hoxie who registered his second straight goal of the game. The Lancer hot-streak continued as less than ninety seconds later, Salles took a shot from outside the 3-point arc and Ortiz deflected it home, giving Rochester a 9-4. With Marcos Chantal off for pushing, Yakiel Perez just ripped a shot into the upper ninety to stretch the Lancers lead to 11-4 at the halftime interval.
Midway through the third quarter, Nelson Santana set up Bo Jelovac who scored from beyond the
3-point arc and two and a half minutes later, Santana again did the dirty work, setting up Domenico Vitale for the tap in goal to cut the Lancers lead to 11-9. Seventeen seconds later, Nate Bourdeau set up Anthony Grant for the game-tying goal. Syracuse continued to push back and just nineteen seconds later, Jelovac scored his second of the quarter to give the hosts the lead again. The Knights' fifth goal of the quarter came forty seconds later when Elenio bagged his second of the game to give the Silver Knights a 15-11 lead after 45 minutes of play. During the run Syracuse tallied four goals in just over a minute of play.
With only 15 minutes left to play, Antonio Manfut tapped in a feed from Vitale the Silver Knights lead to 17-11. Rochester managed to stop the run when Jake Schindler took a restart that set up Salles for the left footed goal, just about a minute later. Salles' goal cut the deficit to17-13. Syracuse answered back, giving Syracuse a six point lead a only minutes later when Vitale set up Chantal for his first tally of the night. With just under five minutes left, Rochester's Joey Tavernese scores his eleventh of the season from in tight to pull the Lancers to within four points. With Ortiz on as the sixth attacker for the Lancers, however, Kenardo Forbes scored in transition to ice the win for Syracuse and make the final score 21-15 for the Silver Knights.
